First Stop — Dance Steps & Figures

We have gathered together detailed descriptions of hundreds of dance steps and figures. In the navigation bar at the left are listed over twenty different Smooth and Latin dance rhythms. For each rhythm, we give a little discussion of its history and character and then a table listing dozens of figures used in the rhythm. For each dance figure, we give the timing and describe the individual steps. Often, we provide a bit of dance choreography too, so you can visualize the figure as it is used within a dance.

Round dancers —

  • refresh your memory of steps you've done
  • learn new figures

Freestyle dancers can use these same figures in their social dancing —

  • learn new steps
  • add variety and interest to your dancing

Note also the "alphabetical index" link in the page header. If you know the name of a figure you want to look at, this is the quickest way to find it.
